Despite this potential, the country’s HDI score is lower than the average HDI for sub-Saharan Africa (0.54-7). However, this ranking mask the notable progress made by Burkina Faso, which has improved its HDI from 0.293 in 2000 to 0.449 in 2021 (a jump of 53.24%). The country has gone through political changes in last 10 years between 2014 and 2024 and faces a complex development, protection, and humanitarian crisis including its high vulnerability to climate crisis that adversely affect children.
