How can you make a difference?

The Nutrition Specialist reports to the Chief Health and Nutrition (Level 4) for guidance and general supervision. The Specialist supports the development and preparation of the nutrition (or a sector of) program/s and is responsible for managing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting of progress of the nutrition programs/projects within the country program. The Specialist provides technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable results in maternal, infant and child nutrition programs/projects according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology (RBM) and UNICEF Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  1. Support to programs/projects development and planning
  2. Provides high technical support to the government counterpart to develop and implement an IYCF scaling up plan and use the community component as entry point to build the required multisectoral platforms to address malnutrition issue in a sustained ways
  3. Ensure joint implementation of the IYCF scaling up plan and others initiatives (Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition scaling up plan and micronutrient scaling up plan 
  4. Strengthen the nutrition multisectoral coordination at central and regional level using sectoral annual plan and specific reporting tools as part of the implementation of the multisectoral nutrition strategic plan
  5. Provides high technical support to the government counterpart to develop and implement an IYCF scaling up plan and use the community component as entry point to build the required multisectoral platforms to address malnutrition issue in a sustained ways 

To qualify as a/an [champion or advocate] for every child you will have…

  • An Advanced University Degree or higher in nutrition, public health, nutritional epidemiology, global/international health and nutrition, health/nutrition research, policy and/or management, or other health related science field is required.

    *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.


    A minimum of five years of professional experience in nutrition, public health, related research or planning and management in relevant areas of maternal, infant and child nutrition, at the international level some of which preferably in a developing country is required. Relevant experience in health/nutrition program/project development and management in any UN system agency or organization is an asset.

  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.

  • Fluency in French and good knowledge of English are required. Knowledge of a local language is an asset.
