The overall goal of the UNICEF Ethiopia programme is to support national and regional efforts towards the progressive realisation of the rights of children and women and the achievement of the Millennium Declaration and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

The Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships section is responsible for winning support for the cause of children through public advocacy and partnerships. It works closely with the mass media to place issues affecting children in the public domain, engages UNICEF followers through social media, and supports resource mobilization through advocacy, visibility, and donor missions to UNICEF-supported programmes. The section works with young people and public influencers to amplify their voice on important issues and ensures the integrity and visibility of the UNICEF brand

How can you make a difference?

As an advocate for children,

You will be  responsible for developing and coordinating UNICEF’s Ethiopia digital media strategy and engagement with young people using a number of digital platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, BlibTV, Delicious, Slideshare, Yammer, blogs and wiki’s. You will identify and create conversations around issues related to UNICEF’s mandate and engaging followers in a dynamic, interactive and meaningful way .You will also make recommendations regarding the use of current and future social media channels

In consultation with Chief of Communication, undertakes the following:

  1. Social media strategy, content, and campaigns: Develop, implement, and manage UNICEF Ethiopia’s digital media strategy. Lead digital media campaigns. Gather, initiate, edit and develop content (stories, photos and audio visual material) to be posted on web and the social media platforms. Lead on creative and strategic social and digital initiatives. Lead UNICEF Ethiopia’s adaptation of global web and intranet content management systems.
  2. Social media management: Develop and manage UNICEF Ethiopia social media platforms and possibly a digital newsletter, including posting of messages, photos and story contents, either routinely, ad hoc or in line with a meeting, visit, event or campaign.
  3. Digital/Tech Innovations: Review existing innovations and identify opportunities for sharing of experiences and lessons learned. Support programmes in innovations deployment and, in tandem, identify additional entry points in the country programme and develop partnerships to initiate work on these opportunities. Identify regional and global trends in innovative technologies, reviewing initiatives with programme counterparts and assessing opportunities for the use of innovations. Work with different UNICEF sections to provide a space to nurture and test new and innovative ideas with local capacity.
  4. Advocacy priorities and campaigns: Support UNICEF Ethiopia’s advocacy objectives by developing strategies around key priorities and mobilizing support for children. Develop strong partnerships with key influencers, young people, and other supporters and promote digital platforms for engagement and action.
  5. Resource mobilization support: Support country office resource mobilization efforts through development of effective communication assets and tools, organization of donor and Natcom field visits, and enhanced donor visibility on UNICEF Ethiopia’s digital media platforms. Develop tools for sharing of UNICEF Ethiopia results with donors and Natcoms on a regular, consistent basis
  6. Internal communication and knowledge-sharing: Identify opportunities to strengthen the capacity of UNICEF Ethiopia staff to effectively use social media. Train on navigation and use of new global knowledge-share platforms, and ensure key knowledge products are widely disseminated across digital platforms. Support staff to share ideas, stories and experiences on blogs, newsletters, and other digital platforms.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have,

  • An Advanced University degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, International Studies, Social Sciences 
    *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in  in the social media, knowledge management, communication or IT area
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
