The Education Section of UNICEF Innocenti is seeking a remote-based research consultant to support two ongoing research projects:

• Teachers for All (T4A): This research aims to analyse the equitability and effectiveness of primary school teacher deployment in sub-Saharan Africa. It is currently active in 14 countries.
• Women in Learning Leadership (WiLL): This research aims to expand the evidence base on female school leaders in primary and pre-primary education by analysing the underrepresentation of women in school leadership positions, the barriers they face, and understanding the leadership and management practices they employ.

How can you make a difference? 

The consultant will contribute to both the T4A research and WiLL research workstreams. Across the two projects, the consultant will collaborate closely with existing research team members (including other qualitative researchers) and the Education unit at UNICEF Innocenti. The consultant will perform the following activities:

• Support research co-creation to design qualitative sampling and research strategy at the country-level
• Collaborate with team member(s) to finalize coding framework and strategy
• Support quality assurance of data gathered
• Code qualitative data from several countries using Nvivo
• Contribute to qualitative data analysis (including coding and thematic analysis)
• Support policy and literature review that can inform qualitative data analysis
• Contribute to research outputs in French and English (e.g., writing reports, briefs, presentations, blogs, etc.) to present findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Participate in regular coordination meetings for the T4A and WiLL teams, the Education unit, and the qualitative technical team.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in social policy, education, sociology, social sciences, international development, or another relevant/ related field. 
  • A minimum of three years of professional work experience at national or international levels in the implementation of rigorous research, with developing country-level experience desirable.
  • Previous experience in qualitative or mixed-methods research and methods.
  • Strong verbal communication/ teamwork skills and ability to work well as part of a geographically dispersed, multicultural team.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset. 
  • Excellent written communication skills in English and attention to detail; fluency in French is highly desirable.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
