UNICEF Nigeria’s WASH programme is a major component of the Country Programme and operates across development and humanitarian contexts. The Temporary Appointment for a WASH Specialist, TOC, will provide technical guidance and management support for the development, preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of WASH programme priorities, with a particular focus on strengthening theory of change, programme coherence, evidence use, systems strengthening and results-based planning across the WASH portfolio.
UNICEF Mozambique is supporting the Government of Mozambique to implement an integrated programme to strengthen climate-resilient Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services in healthcare facilities and surrounding communities.
The consultancy aims to accelerate programme delivery by providing day-to-day implementation support, technical oversight, quality assurance, monitoring, reporting, and coordination across all programme components.
The Caribbean region faces ongoing challenges in achieving universal access to safe and resilient WASH services. While basic coverage is generally high, significant gaps remain in rural areas, small island states, informal settlements, and vulnerable communities. Aging infrastructure, weak wastewater and fecal sludge management systems, limited financing, and fragmented governance continue to affect service quality, sustainability, and public health outcomes.
To address these challenges, stronger sector governance, sustainable financing, and institutional capacity are needed. UNICEF and its partners recognize that infrastructure investments alone are insufficient and emphasize the importance of strengthening human resources, sector leadership, climate-resilient planning, utility performance, and knowledge sharing. Regional cooperation, partnerships with academic institutions, and capacity-building initiatives are key to advancing resilient and safely managed WASH services across the Caribbean.
Grenada’s school WASH systems face high vulnerability to intensifying climate disasters like Hurricane Beryl, causing service disruptions and prolonged closures. A new initiative aims to develop minimum climate-resilient standards for school infrastructure to ensure educational continuity. Stakeholders will be trained to implement these guidelines, improving the long-term sustainability of sanitation and water facilities.
