Azerbaijan maintained high national immunization coverage rates until 2019. However, at the sub-national level, some districts experienced lower coverage due to the piloting of healthcare reforms in these areas, although this did not significantly impact national averages. Since 2020, Azerbaijan has faced a decline in immunization coverage. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted immunization services, significantly affecting DTP1 and DTP3 coverage rates, which dropped to 79% and 82%, respectively, in 2020.
There are significant regional (sub-national) variations in coverage in immunization throughout the country. The officially reported data on vaccination coverage by districts shows an increase in the number of children who did not receive DTP1 and DTP3 doses in 28 districts in 2022 compared to the previous year.
According to the Ministry of Health's report, 281 measles cases were reported in 2019. In response to this outbreak and to enhance preparedness for future infectious disease outbreaks, UNICEF has implemented several initiatives to support strengthening of immunization programme in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
