Somaliland is located in the horn of Africa, it shares borders with Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Somalia. It has arid and semi-arid area with precipitation is estimated at 400-500 mm/year. It has total population of nearly 4 million individuals, which 600,000 are IDP (internally displaced people). Regularly, Somaliland is affected by drought and water scarcity. This impact of water scarcity and drought is even more severe for IDP in Somaliland. The living condition in various IDP camps are difficult they are invariably marginalized and face multiple challenges.
The overall access to WASH infrastructures and services in Somaliland remains low. UNICEF together with Government of Somaliland committed to improve the access and coverage of WASH services in particular for the most vulnerable and marginalized community. This commitment is reflected within UNICEF WASH annual workplan for 2021/2022. In particular, UNICEF has the commitment to increase sanitation services and safe hygiene practices, in particular among the most vulnerable children and their families, including IDP and host communities.
Currently within WASH Section in Somaliland, large portion of the work is dedicated to address hardware component of WASH, in particular drinking water supply and other infrastructure, which aims to mitigate and address regular water scarcity and drought in Somaliland. With growing needs for improved hygiene and sanitation among the population, in particular during COVID19 global pandemic, UNICEF in Somaliland is planning to boost its capacity to address various challenges regarding hygiene, improved sanitation, and in particular hygiene practices among the population in UNICEF targeted areas. The candidate is expected to support the training for UNICEF partners, scaling up hygiene promotion activities in schools and health facilities.
