Data & Analytics (D&A) Section is located within the Division of Data Analysis Planning and Monitoring (DAPM) at UNICEF’s New York headquarters. D&A is the hub of UNICEF’s technical guidance, quality assurance and technical data architecture for programme work on data across the organization. D&A provides leadership, strategic and normative guidance and technical support to UNICEF’s work on generating evidence on the situation of children by supporting the collection, analysis, understanding and use of robust data and statistics, programme data, data science, big data analytics and data literacy.

The Statistics Officer, Health (Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescents Health, MNCAH) will work within the Data Analysis Unit to support the statistical, monitoring and reporting work in the areas of Health (MNCAH).

How can you make a difference?

  1. Data collection, compilation, analysis and quality assurance
  • Support UNICEF’s focal point for MNCAH within the Health and HIV team to compile data, including from surveys and administrative sources for the ongoing update of UNICEF global databases.
  • Validate data from various sources, to ensure they are of high quality and meet the key standards before inclusion into UNICEF global databases, publications, press releases, briefing notes, and presentations
  • Assist in statistical analysis of data and support the production of UNICEF publications and other reports, fact sheets, brochures, country profiles, dashboards and related materials
  • Provide technical support on reporting on prevalence and intervention coverage as required, including responding to ad hoc requests from senior management, Regional Offices (ROs), Country Offices (COS), and partner organizations
  • Help with reviewing the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey questionnaires, tabulation plans and other products on the MNCAH content. 
  • Conduct quality assurance processes including content review and fact checking of data in products generated as part of the MNCAH portfolio.
  • Liaise with COs and ROs as needed to coordinate data reporting on specific topics including but not limited to COVID related situation, and other aspects of the MNCAH portfolio. Produce summary reports with compiled and available data.
  1. Methodological development and interagency partnerships/working groups
  • Contribute to the on-going improvement of data quality at collection stage, including through household surveys and routine reporting systems
  • Contribute to the ongoing effort to harmonize the MNCAH, HIV and immunization databases
  • Support development, modification and testing of measurement tools
  • Provide organizational support to meetings
  • Occasionally represent UNICEF at technical meetings
  1. Further analysis
  • Contribute to further analysis of data, including development and identification of appropriate analytical methods
  • Conduct literature reviews and summaries for use in different publications
  1. Data dissemination and advocacy
  • Provide input into making Health (MNCAH) data, analyses and products accessible and available through different media
  • Support updating of relevant UNICEF-related website pages for Health (MNCAH) related sections including databases, charts, references and content.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in demography, public health, social sciences, epidemiology or statistics. An advanced degree in these areas is an asset.
  • Two years of work experience at the national or international levels in statistical data processing, data analysis, and development/maintenance of statistical databases.

  • Proven experience analysing, compiling and presenting data, with a focus on Health (MNCAH)-related areas.

  • Proven experience in data analysis and writing to disseminate key data and findings to technical and non-technical audiences, particularly related to health (MNCAH indicators).

  • Proven experience in working with STATA or R (preferable).

  • Proven experience in working with data from household surveys in particular DHS and MICS.

  • Proven experience in conducting extensive literature reviews and summarizing findings.

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
