Since 2016, UNICEF is responding to the unique needs of adolescents and young people who are seeking asylum in Europe, on the move, stranded or pushed back. The operation established in Italy aims to provides support to the Government of Italy on children and young migrants and refugees, to ensure timely, equal and appropriate care, protection and support for their social inclusion, as part of the Regional Refugee and Migrant (R&M) Response.

In Italy, UNICEF’s country office is implementing three main programmes. The Youth & Adolescent Development programme focuses on participation and skills building activities to guarantee Unaccompanied Minors (UAMs) and young migrants and refugees have access to key information, have their voices heard and are empowered to take the lead and have the skills and competencies needed for their social inclusion in Italy. The focus of the Child Protection and Gender-Based Violence programmes is access to key life protecting information, promotion of uptake of services, identification and referral of at-risk boys and girls to relevant services, including psychosocial assistance, GBV services and access to alternative care and guardianship. 

Scope of the work

The podcast consultant will be responsible for the production and dissemination of podcast, webradio and audio contents highlighting UNICEF’s work and promoting a positive narrative on migration.

Tasks under this consultancy

Under the supervision of the Communication Assistant, the consultant will undertake the following in accordance with UNICEF’s most recent global brand guidelines:

  • Identification of new channels for the promotion of products on R&M response.
  • Management and re-organization of the main existing channels (i.e., speaker, others)
  • Training of radio/podcast speakers
  • Production of podcasts/web-radio products
  • Design and production of a soundwalk or similar initiative
  • Liaise with radio companies on the production of specific products.
  • Other design tasks, as requested.

Terms and conditions of payment

All services will be delivered on an as requested basis and paid based on days worked and deliverables completed, on submission of a monthly invoice

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • Bachelor’s degree Communication, journalism, political science, contemporary history or related subjects.
  • At least five years of professional experience in podcast/webradio production
  • Proven experience with the design and production of podcast/webradio contents on migrants and refugees
  • Proven experience with the production of soundwalk
  • Proven experience as trainer for podcast and webradio production
  • Experience working with national radio/podcast channels.
  • Ability to deliver high quality products on time and within budget.
  • Experience working remotely, very responsive over email and Skype.
  • Fluency in Italian and English
  • Prior experience of working UNICEF or the UN;
  • Experience of working with migrants and refugees
  • Familiarity with UNICEF’s communication guidelines;

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
