How can you make a difference? 

OBJECTIVE:

The overall objective of setting up this long-term arrangement is to facilitate and expedite the process by which UNICEF Egypt will hire the services of translators to provide necessary translation of official documents and communication materials to various languages including Arabic and English. This will contribute in achievement of Output 6.5 which seeks to establish UNICEF as the leading voice and brand when it comes to issues related to children in Egypt.

Methodology:

Requirements for translation services:

  1. With prior briefing for each assignment, the translators are required to submit their translated work as per the UNICEF Stylebook.
  2. Under the guidance of the Communications team and supervision of direct Specialists, the translator provides high quality translations of press releases, booklets, human interest stories, reports, papers, and other materials subtitles/scripts.
  3. Expected to complete a comprehensive translation of the material provided ensuring clarity and correctness while considering the sensitivity of alternative care jargon and respecting the intentions of the writers and experts.
  4. Expected to verify that in the case of longer documents each chapter or section reads well by establishing flowing tones, cohesion and proper structure and to deliver a final product in a timely manner and of publishable quality.
  5. Present at the briefing on specific projects and issues to be covered based on national and state priorities where required.

 The consultant should:

  1. Demonstrate a client-oriented approach, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
  2. Ensure effective and efficient provision of services, full confidentiality in all aspects of assignment, management of information flow and follow-up on deadlines and commitments made.
  3. Translations are done keeping in mind culture, gender and other diverse sensitivities as per UNICEF guidelines.

Conditions of work:

  1. Consultants should conduct all work independently, in accordance with professional standards. This includes working from their own office space and using their own hardware and software equipment.
  2. The translators should be available at very short notice in case of emergencies and may be required to work on Fridays and Saturdays, based on the requirements of the assignment.
  3. No official travel involved.

ESTIMATED DURATION OF LTA

The assignment, under this Long-Term Agreement (On Call) Contract. The initial agreement would be for two years (2025-2027) with an option for renewal in subsequent years upon satisfactory performance evaluation.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Excellent English and Arabic translation skills and certification as a translator

Ability to work on demand, multi-task and deliver ahead of tight deadline.

At least a bachelor’s degree in the source language and excellent command / writing skills in the target language with capacity to provide final typed material in requisite font that can be universally accessed.

At least three years’ experience, and expertise, in the relevant languages especially for translation of technical documents.

Experienced in working with UN or comparable international organizations is an asset.

NOTE FOR CONSULTANTS AND INDIVIDUAL CONTRACTORS:

-Any attempt to unduly influence UNICEF’s selection process will lead to automatic disqualification of the applicant.

-Joint applications of two or more individuals are not accepted.

-Please note, UNICEF does not charge any fee during any stage of the process.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
