For every child, the right to a voice

How can you make a difference?

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programmes, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

UNICEF is a leading humanitarian and development agency with global reach and long-standing experience and expertise in addressing Gender Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE). Addressing GBViE is a prerequisite for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is a core element of UNICEF’s gender equality programming priorities, grounded in its Strategic Plan, 2022–2025 and Gender Action Plan 2022–2025. UNICEF’s response to GBViE is shaped by its humanitarian responsibilities and commitments set out in the Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action (CCCs), the IASC GBV Guidelines, the IASC GBV Minimum Standards and the Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action. UNICEF’s vision is that the rights of girls and women affected by emergencies to live free from GBV are fulfilled. Three outcomes are linked to the realization of this vision, each of which forms an integral aspect of UNICEF’s GBViE programming in practice: support survivors with access to a comprehensive set of services; mitigate the risk of GBV across humanitarian sectors; and prevent GBV by addressing its underlying conditions and drivers.

Across South Sudan, GBV, including sexual violence, intimate partner violence, sexual exploitation and abuse, and child marriage, remains pervasive, with adolescent girls particularly at risk. Access to lifesaving, multi-sectoral GBV services, including health care, case management, psychosocial and mental health support, remains severely limited. UNICEF South Sudan is scaling up efforts to address GBV and is expanding partnerships with national partners including women-led organisations (WLO) to increase the availability of GBV prevention, response, and risk mitigation interventions. UNICEF is working to strengthen the capacity of partners to deliver GBV services  and is implementing Communities Care, UNICEF’s flagship GBV prevention intervention to address harmful norms and beliefs that underpin GBV.

  2. Programme management, monitoring and delivery of results
