While basic coverage is generally high, significant gaps remain in rural areas, small island states, informal settlements, and vulnerable communities. Aging infrastructure, weak wastewater and fecal sludge management systems, limited financing, and fragmented governance continue to affect service quality, sustainability, and public health outcomes.
To address these challenges, stronger sector governance, sustainable financing, and institutional capacity are needed. UNICEF and its partners recognize that infrastructure investments alone are insufficient and emphasize the importance of strengthening human resources, sector leadership, climate-resilient planning, utility performance, and knowledge sharing. Regional cooperation, partnerships with academic institutions, and capacity-building initiatives are key to advancing resilient and safely managed WASH services across the Caribbean.
Grenada’s school WASH systems face high vulnerability to intensifying climate disasters like Hurricane Beryl, causing service disruptions and prolonged closures. A new initiative aims to develop minimum climate-resilient standards for school infrastructure to ensure educational continuity. Stakeholders will be trained to implement these guidelines, improving the long-term sustainability of sanitation and water facilities.
