For every child, the right to care

Working under the direct supervision of the Chief of Communication and Advocacy and in close collaboration with programme sections, write and edit high-quality products and materials, such as publications, fact sheets, brochures, blogs, talking points, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy materials.

The specific writing and editing tasks will be determined by the Communication team in response to the needs of the office and conveyed to the consultant on a rolling basis. Payment will be made monthly according to an agreed day rate and based on the actual days worked.

How can you make a difference? 

You can make a difference through delivering the following tasks - 

  1. Write and edit high quality English-language flagship publications, such as the UNICEF China annual report.
  2. Edit English language publications, reports, fact sheets, advocacy briefs and brochures from programme sections to turn these into effective products for visibility and advocacy.
  3. Occasionally support writing and editing for communication products, such as campaign materials, press releases, human interest stories, social media packs and other communication and advocacy materials. 
  4. Occasionally support front office with editing of speeches and briefing notes. Other writing and editing tasks as needed.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Individuals undertaking the assignment must meet following requirements:

Minimum requirements:

  • Education:

Candidates should hold at least a bachelor's degree in Communication, English, Media Studies, International Development or related field.

  • Work Experience:
    1. At least 10 years of relevant prior work experience in communications, public relations, media, writing, or other relevant fields 
    2. At least 5 years of work experience in writing and editing of publications, stories, articles, briefs and other communication materials. 
  • Skills:
    1. Demonstrated experience in communicating complex development issues to multiple audiences, and the ability to interpret technical and research data in a concise and engaging manner. 
    2. Well organized and structured 
    3. Strong drive for results, taking pride in delivering as per expectation in terms of quality and timeliness 
    4. Experience working with UNICEF or other UN organizations is desirable 
    5. Knowledge and understanding of China and its development context is desirable
    6. Initiative, passion and commitment to UNICEF's mission and professional values 

They will use their own equipment, computer, office space, telecommunication facilities.

Language Requirements: Fluency in English.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance.  Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station is required for IP positions and will be facilitated by UNICEF. Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.

As per Article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.

Government employees who are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government positions before taking up an assignment with UNICEF. UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason. 

UNICEF does not charge a processing fee at any stage of its recruitment, selection, and hiring processes (i.e., application stage, interview stage, validation stage, or appointment and training). UNICEF will not ask for applicants’ bank account information.
