How can you make a difference? 

The Nutrition Specialist (Food System) reports to the Chief of Child Nutrition and Development (P5). The Specialist supports the coordinated development, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of First Foods and other food systems programmes/projects within the framework of the child nutrition and development component of the Country Programme. The Specialist provides technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of results on First Foods related programmes/projects.

The Specialist contributes to the achievement of concrete and sustainable results on Food Systems and First Foods related programmes/projects according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology (RBM) and UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, UNICEF Food System Framework and UNICEF ACO Programme Strategy Note on Child Nutrition and Development and the standards of performance and accountability framework.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  1. Management and advisory support to the Chief on Food Systems and First Foods Initiative
  2. Programme development, planning & monitoring results on First Foods
  3. Technical and operational support to programme implementation
  4. Coordination, networking and partnership building including private sector partnership

Minimum requirements:

Education: 

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: public health, nutrition, food systems, agriculture, economics, social development, or another relevant technical field.

Work Experience: 

  • Minimum of eight years of progressive direct, practical professional experience in design, business development, implementation of food systems solutions, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, or livelihood/value-chain development interventions specifically focused on improving availability, affordability, and access to nutritious foods for young children and vulnerable households.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying child sensitive food systems frameworks in designing solutions to improve the quality of young children’s foods. Experience in applying UNICEF food systems for children framework is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience and engagement in updating regulatory frameworks and standards on complementary foods and healthier food environments.
  • Experience in capacity building and strengthening systems, business models and programmes focused on food systems, and agriculture in a strong asset.
  • Relevant experience in evidence generation, monitoring, evaluation, knowledge management, supporting market/value-chain assessments, dietary assessments, child food poverty analysis, food security, and related issues in relation to improving the quality of children’s foods and preparing technical reports, briefs, and other knowledge products for internal and external audiences.
  • Experience working in fragile or humanitarian settings is a strong asset.
  • Prior experience in strategic coordination and multi-stakeholder partnership management with UN agencies, international organizations, academia, or large multisectoral programmes is an advantage, particularly in relation to food systems, and interrelated systems across health, WASH, and social protection systems.
  • Experience with working with private-sector partners on food systems solutions to improve availability, affordability, and access to nutritious foods for young children and vulnerable households is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Desirables:

  • Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance.  Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station is required for IP positions and will be facilitated by UNICEF.
