How can you make a difference?
The overall scope of the work involves promoting physical accessibility for persons with disabilities that is creating barrier-free spaces within UNICEF-Eritrea premises through modifications and adjustments the existing physical environments through installing ramps, wide doorways, and accessible restrooms and services. The detailed Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for the civil works is attached herewith.

The overall objectives highlight the importance of creating an inclusive workplace that allows all employees, including those with disabilities, to contribute their skills without limitations. Workplace Accessibility ensures inclusive environments by removing physical, enabling equal opportunities for all employees. It also fosters a sense of belonging, improves productivity, and strengthens teamwork and collaboration by allowing every employee to contribute their skills without limitations.
The specific objectives of promoting office accessibility within ECO for employees and persons with disabilities include:
- Supporting Employees and Visitors with Disabilities: Promote accessible workplaces helps employees, visitors, customers, future workers and children with disabilities to perform their jobs easily and fairly.
- Adjustment and Modifications Existing Physical Environments: Making workplaces accessible in early times means fewer special changes are needed later, making things easier for HR during recruitment process for persons with disabilities
- Promoting and Encouraging Inclusivity: Accessibility creates a workplace where people respect, support, and work well with each other. UNICEF-ECO is committed to promote inclusion and equity for all persons with disabilities
- Preventing discrimination: Promoting accessible work environment makes work fair; prevent discrimination against persons and children with disabilities and supports UNICEF good values.
- Boosting morale: When needs are met, employees feel happier, work better, and stay longer.
- Showing equality and commitment: Accessibility proves the organization values fairness and attracts a wide range of people, including persons with disabilities.
Deliverable 1: Promoting Inclusive and Accessible Toilet Facilities
- Modify and adjust one of the existing toilet facilities in UNICEF office to make accessible, convenient and comfortable toilet facilities for various types of disabilities.
Deliverable 2: Installation of ramps for promoting accessibility, physical environment and services
- Key Ramps design considerations include ADA recommends a 1:12 slope ratio for usability. Minimum width should be 36 inches, with adequate landing space using non-slip materials for safety.
Deliverable 3: Smooth and Accessible Entrance Gate
- The main gate that leads to UNICEF office – modification and smoothing the rough roads and installation of ramps to remove the mobility and accessibility for persons with disabilities. barriers and promote smooth

Minimum requirements:
Education: A university degree| (BA) is required in civil engineering, construction engineering, architecture or other relevant areas.
Work Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience, at the national and/or international levels, in project monitoring, site supervision, quality assurance and/or other directly related technical fields is required.
Understanding of development work.
Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:
- Good at developing project plans, supervising construction crews, ensuring compliance with safety and building codes, and managing project resources.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, project management skills, and the ability to address technical and design issues.
- Good knowledge of latest developments and technology in construction industry.
- Good knowledge of access for persons with disabilities infrastructure, buildings and services
Language Requirements: : Fluency in English and the local language is required. Knowledge of other UN working languages is an asset.
Desirables:
Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.
