How can you make a difference? 

Scope of Work:

Somalia continues to face significant challenges in immunization uptake, primarily due to ongoing conflict, fragile health systems, and climate-related displacement. The country has launched initiatives, such as the Somalia Immunization and Polio Eradication Task Force, to combat low vaccination rates and address preventable child mortality. Despite these efforts, over 1.5 million children remain unvaccinated, with limited access to immunization services in many regions. The government plans to introduce pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines to further reduce child mortality rates. The implementation of the 'Big Catch-Up' initiative to reach zero-dose children is underway, with two rounds completed and additional two rounds are planned in the coming months. The country aiming to transition the immunization chain management under the government system from the current parallel system managed by the NGOs. The consultants will provide technical support in the mentioned areas to scale up vaccine uptake and enhance other health services within their state.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • A bachelor's degree in public health, medicine, pharmacy or other health related field
  • At least 5 years of professional work experience at national or state level in outbreak response, routine immunization, SBC, Cold chain, public health, and other relevant programs.
  •  
    Demonstrated experience providing technical assistance to governments on the implementation of outbreak responses and SIAs.
  • Emergency work experience is an asset.
  • Willingness to immediately take up the assignment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset. 
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
