Background:

Good writing is important for all organizations. As a leader in data, research, storytelling and advocacy for children, UNICEF must ensure that its publications and written content are professionally crafted and clearly understood, that they resonate with their intended audiences and help UNICEF speak with one voice to protect its reputation and brand.

UNICEF seeks the services of an editor, proofreader and writer to support the development of quality written products related to planning, monitoring, and reporting in the Nigeria Country Office.

The services are expected to be delivered in alignment with the UNICEF Style Book which provides up-to-date guidance on language, style, grammar, spelling and rules governing writing within the organization to ensure consistency and clarity in UNICEF’s printed and electronic publications.  

How can you make a difference? 

Purpose Of the Assignment:

Editing, proofreader and writing services for planning, monitoring and reporting in UNICEF Nigeria.

There are five deliverables expected to be delivered during a period of approximately 18 months. For each deliverable, the consultant is expected to:

(1) have a discussion with the Supervisor to agree and clarify the communication-related objectives of the deliverable, including main audience, style, and length as well as the expected timeline.

(2) providing an annotated proposed structure, if relevant.

(3) share a draft and accommodate feedback, before finalization.

Work Assignment Overview:

 1. Elaboration of 2-3 pager high-level policy document targeted to the UNICEF Executive Director describing the progress on how UNICEF supported the government at the federal and selected state levels on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system strengthening (2–3-page report)

Tasks:

• Conceptualize the outline and narrative with the M&E system strengthening core team

•Conduct at least 10 interviews to gather perspectives on the topic

•Prepare a draft report

• Finalize the report, incorporating the feedback from the core team

2. Writing and editing of key summary briefs and strategies related to planning, monitoring and reporting

3. Editing outcome and output RAM reporting narratives

Quality and well written narrative on country programme progress.

4. Editing the End of Year Summary narrative

5. Public version of the Annual report (14 pages)

6. Writing and editing of key summary briefs and strategies related to planning, monitoring and reporting.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • A university degree in communication, writing, journalism, or another relevant discipline.
  • At least eight years of relevant work experience. We welcome backgrounds from outside of the international development / humanitarian sector, including journalism and advertising.
  • Familiarity with UNICEF’s work in the field or developing country/emergency work experience is highly valued.
  • Exceptional writing: strong storytelling skills are essential.
  • Creative curiosity. You’re driven to ask the ‘why’ behind the initial responses you get.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset. 
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
