Consultancy Title: Editor for Office Internal Audit and Investigations

BACKGROUND

Purpose of Activity/Assignment: 

The Office of Internal Audit and Investigations (OIAI) is a key component of UNICEF’s independent internal oversight system. It has two sections: the Internal Audit Section and the Investigations Section. The former helps UNICEF fulfill its mission by providing independent and objective assurance and advisory services, designed to add value and improve the adequacy, effectiveness and efficiency of UNICEF’s operations. OIAI reports to the Executive Director and independently to the Executive Board on the results of its work. 

In pursuit of its mandate, OIAI is looking for an individual to assist in the substantive editorial and proofread as part of the quality assurance process for finalizing internal audit reports and other written outputs.  The person will report to the Deputy Director, Internal Audit with oversight by the Manager, Professional Practices.

Scope of Work:

The Editor will be responsible for reviewing, editing and redrafting the written work product of internal auditors, investigators and other OIAI staff, and proofreading prior to publication, as needed. Including the following activities:

  1. Edit or rewrite all copy to the highest professional standards, including UN standards where required, ensuring continuity, logical arrangement and adequate support, readability, clarity of expression, style and consistency, overall presentation and agreement with editorial policy, internal report writing procedures and relevant style guides. As part of this, where necessary, meet with staff to review edits and offer comments to improve the work with the intended audiences in mind.
  2. Copy edit and proofread reports and other OIAI documents, checking for grammatical accuracy and internal consistency to house style, such as in capitalization, spelling, citations, abbreviations, references, formatting, as applicable.
  3. Participate in the development and maintenance of guidance and templates for the writing of reports, as needed.

Share commonly observed editing issues with staff. 

Terms of Reference / Deliverables

Professional substantive editorial review of draft internal audit reports, including, where necessary, meet with staff to review edits and offer comments to improve the work with the intended audiences in mind.

  • 6 Draft internal audit report with substantive editorial comments in track changes, and discussion where necessary.

Qualifications

(1) Education

Advanced university degree, preferably in English language, law, journalism, international relations or social and economic development issues.

(2) Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

  • At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in writing or editing documents/publications, preferably related to legal activities, investigation, compliance, audit and assurance-related activities, international relations, or social and economic development. 
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, including advanced formatting functions, and experience in referencing and research.
  • Knowledge of the United Nations and UNICEF editorial guidelines and policies is generally desirable.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of a second UN language is desirable

    • the costs per each deliverable and the total lump-sum for the whole assignment (in US$) to undertake the terms of reference.
    • travel costs and daily subsistence allowance, if internationally recruited or travel is required as per TOR.
    • Any other estimated costs: visa, health insurance, and living costs as applicable.

  • Any emergent / unforeseen duty travel and related expenses will be covered by UNICEF.
  • At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance.  Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station is required for IP positions and will be facilitated by UNICEF. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.
