The Office of Innovation specifically looks to form partnerships around frontier technologies (like drones and UAVs, blockchain, 21st century skills, urban technologies, new banking tools, wearables and sensors, or 3D-Printing) that exist at the intersection of $100 billion business markets and 1 billion person needs – and to identify how they can grow and scale profitably and inclusively.
How can you make a difference?
UNICEF’s Office of Innovation is seeking a Design Lead to strengthen its brand presence and recognition; develop and facilitate processes and workflows to develop high quality partnership and communications products to deepen engagement with a range of stakeholders and audiences.
The Design Lead will be embedded in the Partnerships & Communications team to help shape the visual design, representation and interpretation of the brand, core messages and values of OOI. The consultant will also oversee the development and implementation of creative briefs for third party vendors across OOI to ensure brand cohesion and consistency across all communication products.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Develop and implement systems and processes for the strategic design of partnership and communication assets for priority initiatives and for key audiences
- Ensure implementation of OOI’s brand across all communications assets and evaluate insights and learnings from audience engagement
- Provide guidance and support across OOI teams to ensure brand governance, cohesion and implementation across projects and initiatives
- Produce design blueprints and templates, proactively develop designs, and update a wide range of communications materials to support partnership and communication audience engagement objectives
- Develop and facilitate effective and efficient workflow processes to ensure branded communication materials are developed to the highest standards and quality
- Review and initiate visual improvements to partnership and communication products including but not limited to; slide decks, briefing notes, reports, and other documents while crafting supporting visualizations, artwork, infographics, and other graphic elements when needed for projects, campaigns, and events, in close collaboration with project and technical leads
- Collaborate with and guide the in-house design function (for programme design) to ensure brand consistency
- Provide creative guidance for out-sourced design projects including but not limited to overseeing the development and implementation of creative briefs
- Ensure all OOI design assets are well documented and accessible in files and formats that can be used across a range of platforms, systems, design tools and systems.
- Ensure the appropriate, coherent and consistent use of the OOI/UNICEF brand for visual display products, merchandise, and any other business needs, as well as branded visual assets.

Minimum requirements:
- Education:
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher*) in Design, Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or other relevant fields.
*A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher*) in Design, Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or other relevant fields.
- Work Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of proven professional in writing and content development for international organizations or media.
- A strong track record of delivering quality written content for external engagement and visibility.
- Knowledge of UNICEF’s and UNICEF’s Office of Innovation’s key messaging and focus areas (including data science, connectivity, open-source technology, working with start-ups and a range of other partners, etc.)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required
Desirables:
- Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.
- Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
Travel:
- The consultant is expected to travel once to Stockholm, for a stay of 6 nights.
- The consultant is responsible for arranging his/her own travel, including visa and travel insurance.
Payment details and further considerations
- Payment of professional fees will be based on the submission of agreed deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.
