BACKGROUND
Purpose of Activity/ Assignment:
The Social Media Consultant – Humanitarian role resides in the Digital Strategy Section within UNICEF's Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (DGCA). The Section consists of the Web Editorial, Digital Governance and Web Platforms, Social Media, and Digital Marketing and Partnerships teams, all working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide expert digital services and capacity building within the organization.
Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, the Digital Strategy Section (DSS) draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. We create and deliver compelling content to international audiences of parents, young people and UNICEF supporters, building engaged communities in multiple languages across social media and web platforms, while providing expert digital services to the organization.
One of the priority areas for advocacy and communication in GCA is humanitarian emergencies and social media is a key means through which UNICEF engages public audiences on these issues.
Scope of Work:
Under the guidance of the Digital Communication Manager, the consultant will develop social media copy and content, and support on social media management for UNICEF’s global social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube and more) pertaining to UNICEF humanitarian agenda, including coverage of L3s and L2s, as well as cross-cutting humanitarian priorities – EWIPA, HAC, Child Protection, Malnutrition, and more. The successful delivery of these tasks will contribute towards the successful implementation of UNICEF’s communication and advocacy objectives in this area.

This includes coordination with advocacy, web and content teams, coordination with graphic designer and digital language producers to ensure packages are adapted and translated for multiple markets. Qualifications
Education: University degree in Communications, marketing, journalism, or similar
Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required *:
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience developing and executing social media strategies, including creating social media content for global/large accounts (500K+ audience).
- Demonstrated experience in communicating on complex high-profile humanitarian emergencies for global/large accounts (500K+ audience). Experience should include both sudden-onset and protracted emergencies.
- Proven ability to lead the design and execution of social media strategy.
- Proven ability to write flawless, tight social copy on constant deadlines. Strong copy-editing skills.
- Proven ability to write and edit long-form digital content and external communication materials.
- Extensive demonstrated experience with social media platforms including Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, WhatsApp Channels, YouTube.
- Ability to translate technical and nuanced information into clear, emotional, and engaging content for broad public audiences.
- Experience of optimizing YouTube channels and video content for social media channels.
- Experience using tools such as Hootsuite, Emplifi, Trello and Campaign Trackly.
- Experience in reporting on quantitative and qualitative social and analytics.
- Awareness of social media communication behaviours in low- and middle-income regions/countries is highly desirable.
- Experience of working with digital influencers is highly desirable.
- Understanding of and experience in paid digital marketing and fundraising strategies a plus.
- Experience in working for the UN, UNICEF or with International NGOs or global organizations is a plus

- Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.
U.S. Visa information:
With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants. Consultants are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
