How can you make a difference?

The UNICEF Strategic Plan has elevated action on climate change and environmental degradation as an organizational priority, to be integrated throughout UNICEF programmes. To concretize this, UNICEF HQ is implementing its global Healthy Environments for Healthy Children (HEHC) programme framework in over 30 countries including programmes for addressing lead poisoning. To mobilize collection action, UNICEF and partners have founded a Children’s Environmental Health Collaborative to protect child health and development from the impact of climate change and environmental degradation. Lead exposure is a silent but devastating environmental health issue, with far-reaching consequences for children's health and development. An estimated 1 in 3 children globally have blood lead levels that are of significant concern, contributing to an estimated 1.5 million deaths annually. In response to this crisis, the Partnership for a Lead-Free Future was launched in September 2024 by UNICEF, in collaboration with USAID, UNEP, WHO, the World Bank, Open Philanthropy, and other key stakeholders. The Partnership is the first-ever global, public-private coalition focused on ending childhood lead poisoning in LMICs by 2040. This initiative brings together governments, civil society, and the private sector to champion country-led efforts to eliminate lead from consumer products, improve industrial practices, and enforce lead mitigation standards. The Partnership for a Lead-Free Future is an accelerator partnership of UNICEF’s HEHC programme and is linked to the Children’s Environmental Health Collaborative.  As part of UNICEF’s contribution to the mission of the PLF, UNICEF’s Healthy Environments for Healthy Children Programme will expand its programmatic support to UNICEF country offices in developing and implementing lead-free future programmes.

Be a force for change in global child health. The Programme Specialist [Lead-Free Future Programme] will work under the guidance and direct supervision of the Lead, HEHC programme and in coordination with UNICEF divisions/offices implementing a lead-free future programme and the PLF Secretariat. 

The Programme Specialist [Lead-Free Future Programme] will play an important role in driving progress, at a country and global level, toward the mitigation of lead. They will ensure the technical rigor of UNICEF’s programmes against lead by providing technical guidance, support and quality assurance to ROs/COs, global programme management, global programme support and contribute learnings in support of the Partnership for a Lead-Free Future.

To qualify as a champion for every child you will have… 

  • Minimum requirements
  1. Education: Master or equivalent (Advanced University Degree) in Environment, Environmental Applied Engineering, Environmental Science/Health, Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental Engineering, Toxicology, Public Health and any other related fields.
  2. Work Experience: At Least 8 years of relevant work experience in programme management, environmental protection, public health policy, research, monitoring and evaluation, developing and managing technical resources.
  3. Skills: Demonstrated experience in providing technical guidance on public health policy, implementing programmes related to environmental health, knowledge management, reporting against a donor budget. 
  4. Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. 
  • Desirables
  1. Data analysis, financial management, monitoring and evaluation, planning.
  2. Knowledge of another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
  3. Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency.

Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.
