Breastfeeding is one of the most powerful interventions for child survival, growth, and development. In Kiribati, where malnutrition remains a critical concern, strengthening breastfeeding practices is essential. With high rates of stunting, anemia, and childhood obesity, the need for systemic, sustainable change is urgent.
UNICEF Pacific, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS), is committed to transforming health systems and communities to better support breastfeeding. This consultancy will play a pivotal role in revitalizing Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) implementation in Kiribati, ensuring that health facilities and communities are equipped to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.
How can you make a difference?
As the BFHI Consultant, you will;
- Assess and identify bottlenecks in current BFHI implementation.
- Design actionable solutions to address these gaps, in close consultation with MHMS.
- Develop a tailored capacity-building plan for health workers, incorporating coaching, mentorship, and sustainable training models.
- Support institutional integration of BFHI into quality improvement frameworks and pre-service training platforms.
Expected outcomes:
- A strengthened training program for healthcare providers.
- Increased hospital leadership engagement in BFHI.
- Enhanced community-based support for breastfeeding mother’s post-discharge.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
- Education: Advanced degree in nutrition, public health, midwifery, pediatric or family health, or a related field.
- Experience: At least 5 years in breastfeeding-related work, including clinical experience. BFHI training and mentorship experience required. Certification from IBFAN or equivalent preferred.
- Skills: Strong training, analytical, and communication skills. Proven ability to work independently in challenging environments.
- Language: Fluency in English required; knowledge of local languages is an asset.
- Desirable: Experience in the Pacific Islands and/or with UNICEF or other UN agencies.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
