BACKGROUND

Purpose of Activity/Assignment: 

Unintentional injuries, including road traffic crashes and drowning, are among the leading causes of death and disability among children and adolescents globally. Addressing these preventable causes of mortality is central to achieving UNICEF’s Strategic Plan Goal Area 1 and contributing to the SDG targets on reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. UNICEF has been advancing its agenda on child injury prevention by building evidence, developing strategic partnerships, and supporting countries in program design and implementation. Technical leadership is now needed to further strengthen guidance on safe and sustainable mobility for children, finalize key frameworks for injury data and indicators, and support critical donor engagement to scale up proven interventions.

Under the supervision of the Health Specialist – Disability, NCDs, and Injuries, the consultant will provide technical and strategic support to UNICEF’s global child injury prevention work. The consultant will focus on finalizing core knowledge products, including guidance on safe and sustainable mobility, a data and indicator framework, and a roadmap for child injury prevention. In addition, the consultant will support donor reporting for existing partnerships (Abertis and RNLI) and contribute to the preparation of proposals for Phase 2 funding with Michelin and FIA Foundation to sustain and expand the programmatic response.

Scope of Work:

The consultant will undertake the following tasks:

•     Finalize UNICEF’s Guidance on Safe and Sustainable Mobility for Children, articulating a cross-sectoral strategy for child road traffic injury prevention.

•     Finalize the Child Injury Prevention Data and Indicator Framework and develop a roadmap to support countries in strengthening injury surveillance and response.

•     Provide technical support for the preparation of donor reports for the Abertis and RNLI grants, ensuring quality, timeliness, and compliance with donor guidelines.

•     Prepare funding proposals for continuing partnerships with Michelin and FIA Foundation, aligning with UNICEF’s injury prevention strategy and global goals.

•     Liaise with regional and country offices and global partners to ensure that knowledge products and donor submissions reflect best practices and latest evidence.

Qualifications

  1. Education

Advanced university degree (Masters) in:

•           Public Health, Child Injury Prevention, Road Safety and Drowning Prevention

•           Epidemiology and Health Data Analysis

•           Policy Development and Strategic Planning in Child Health

•           Health Systems Strengthening and Integration

•           Resource Mobilization and Donor Engagement in Global Health

Language Proficiency: English

(2) Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

1.         Advanced university degree (Masters) in Public Health, Child Injury Prevention, Social Policy, Social Development, Community Development, or related field.

2.         At least eight years of progressively responsible professional work experience in child injury prevention, health programming, policy development, monitoring and evaluation.

3.         Proven expertise in developing technical guidance, policy documents, and donor reports in the area of injury prevention and public health.

4.         Experience in fundraising and preparing funding proposals for global health initiatives.

5.         Strong knowledge of global injury prevention frameworks

6.         Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with UN agencies, governments, and international NGOs.

7.         Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Any emergent / unforeseen duty travel and related expenses will be covered by UNICEF.

  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.
