For every child, Education for every child, the right to be heard

In Cameroon, UNICEF’s Education Programme supports the Government in expanding equitable access to quality education, strengthening education systems, and enhancing sector coordination. These efforts are implemented through key initiatives such as the Programme d’Appui à la Professionnalisation du Métier de l’Enseignant (PAPMEC), the Cameroon Basic Education Support Project (CAMBESP), and education in emergencies interventions.

Despite ongoing progress, the education sector continues to face significant challenges, persistent disparities in access and learning quality, including a high number of out-of-school children and the disruptive effects of humanitarian crises on education systems. In response, UNICEF combines programmatic, institutional, and community-based approaches to improve learning outcomes and promote inclusive education for all children.

In this context, international interns can make a meaningful contribution to the Education Section by reinforcing its operational effectiveness, coordination functions, analytical work, and documentation of results. Interns bring fresh perspectives, strong technical and digital skills, research and analytical capacity, and additional bandwidth to support programme implementation, partnerships, knowledge management, and reporting. At the same time, the internship offers young professionals a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a complex country context that combines humanitarian crises with long-term development challenges, allowing them to build practical skills, deepen their understanding of education systems strengthening and education in emergencies, and develop professional competencies in a real-world development and humanitarian setting.

The purpose and objectives of the UNICEF internship programme are:

1. Provide a structured framework through which eligible undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds are assigned to UNICEF offices, where their academic learning is enhanced through meaningful and supervised practical work assignments.

2. Expose interns to the work of UNICEF, with particular emphasis on child rights-based programming, humanitarian and development action, and UNICEF’s zero-tolerance approach to sexual exploitation and abuse and sexual harassment (PSEA).

3. Enable UNICEF offices to benefit from the support of qualified and motivated students with specialized knowledge and skills across a range of professional fields.

How can you make a difference?

The two interns will work with the Education Section to:

  • Support the implementation of education programme activities, including trainings, workshops and field missions, in order to gain practical, hands-on experience
  • Assist in the follow-up of activities implemented by partners and contribute to basic monitoring tasks, strengthening understanding of programme delivery
  • Support the preparation of meetings, including drafting minutes, briefing notes and presentations, while gaining exposure to UNICEF coordination processes
  • Contribute to communication and visibility efforts through documentation of activities, success stories and short reports
  • Participate in field visits where feasible to gain direct exposure to UNICEF operations and community-level interventions
  • Assist in the collection of qualitative information, including observations and beneficiary feedback, contributing to programme learning
  • Provide general support to the Education Section, bringing in academic knowledge and skills from diverse backgrounds to support programme delivery.
