For every child, the right to Commitment
How can you make a difference?
The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does—in programmes, advocacy and operations. UNICEF’s equity strategy emphasizes the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families and translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism.
Strategic office context: Maldives is a Small Island Developing State with high exposure to climate-related risks, including sea-level rise, coastal flooding, saline intrusion, extreme heat, water scarcity, coastal erosion and intensified storms. These risks affect children’s rights, learning continuity, school safety, health and wellbeing, and community resilience. Schools are trusted public spaces across island communities and are increasingly central to UNICEF Maldives’ efforts to strengthen climate-resilient education systems and support children and young people as agents of climate action.
UNICEF Maldives has introduced and expanded climate change resilience programming under its Country Programme, with a growing focus on climate education, youth-led climate advocacy, systems strengthening, evidence generation, and climate finance mobilization. The portfolio includes work linked to climate-resilient schools, youth engagement in climate policy processes, climate literacy, green skills, school preparedness, and the development of climate finance proposals in partnership with the Government of Maldives and relevant national institutions.

The Children and Climate Change Officer leads UNICEF Maldives’ work on climate change by supporting the planning, partnerships, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of children and climate change initiatives, with a priority focus on climate-resilient education and youth climate action.
