UNICEF China works to promote policies and laws safeguarding children's rights. The Social Policy Section leads our efforts in child poverty, social protection, public financial management for children, and governance. Working closely with the Chinese government and other partners, we generate evidence on multidimensional child deprivations, social protection system, basic public services for children, public financial management, and early childhood care services. The evidence helps inform legislation and policies that benefit all children, especially the most vulnerable, benefit from equitable and inclusive social protection and basic public services. We also support local pilots at the subnational level to strengthen the linkage between social assistance programmes and service delivery.

How can you make a difference? 

The Intern will report to the social policy specialist, and work closely with the social policy officers. He/she will have opportunities to contribute to UNICEF China’s social protection programmes. Main tasks will include:

  1. Conducting desk research in the field of social protection, including social assistance, health insurance and maternity insurance, etc.
  2. Supporting the research management, reviewing research reports and drafting policy notes and other analytical reports in the area of social protection.
  3. Conducting literature review on trends and good practices in strengthening linkages between cash transfers and social services for vulnerable children and families.
  4. Developing communication content for social media including blog posts, videos and graphics to advocate for child-sensitive social assistance services.      
  5. Supporting the organization of seminars/workshops or missions organized by the team with key stakeholders.
  6. Undertaking other relevant ad-hoc tasks as assigned by the Social Policy Specialist.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… Be enrolled in a degree programme in postgraduate study, majored in public/social policy, public administration, sociology and other related areas;

  • Knowledge about social protection system in China is a strong advantage;
  • Have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records, or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor;
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Have strong attention to details and proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks;
  • Be able to work individually and as part of a team;
  • Have proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel);
  • Previous volunteer/intern experience desired;
  • Have no immediate relatives working in any UNICEF offices;
  • Fluency in English and Mandarin is required.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions.
