The fundamental and primary mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

UNICEF has been operating in the Sultanate of Oman for over 50 years. The overarching goal of the 2022-25 Country Programme is “to support the Government to empower all children in Oman to realize their rights and participate equitably in building a knowledge-based society and competitive economy”, by

• Outcome 1: Strengthening evidence-based policies for children, so that by 2025 improved public finance analysis, data and evidence are used to inform social policies and programmes for children, adolescents and young people, and progress towards the realization of the SDGs. 
• Outcome 2: Enhancing systems and services for children, adolescents and young people, so that all children, adolescents and young people in Oman, including those with disabilities, benefit from improved social service systems and services.

Communication raises the visibility of key issues affecting children by employing evidence-based, compelling messages designed to connect with and inspire key audiences. The communication team works hand-in hand to enable the achievements of and advocacy around delivering results for children through our UNICEF Oman programmatic outcomes.  

How can you make a difference during the volunteering opportunity?

Under the supervision of the Communication Officer, the intern will learn how to support the communication department through the following:

Specific tasks

  Communications:

• Campaigns -
  • Working with the comms team on UNICEF campaigns and event management
  • Drafting and designing World Children Day material and support with event and coordination
  • Support with inventory and merchandise management and coordination with vendors

• Social Media -
  • Support translation when required.
  • Support design Social Media content and support with innovative engagement ideas to boost engagement and followers

Other tasks

• Support documentation/minute-taking for internal / external meetings
• Drafting letters to external stakeholders if required
• Support review of translated reports
• Provide logistical support with events as required.

Qualifications required:

• At least 18 years of age.
• Studying Marketing, Management, Information Systems, Communication or strategic communication disciplines.
• Demonstrated familiarity / experience with social media platforms (e.g. YouTube, Instagram, Twitter) is an asset
• Have experience with design and basic skills to use ADOBE illustrator, ADOBE Photoshop, CANVA or any design of assets tool.
• Have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor.
• Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother or sister) working in any UNICEF office.
• Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to, and 
• Fluent in English and Arabic.
• Valid Visa in Oman for internationals.

The volunteer will be provided training on:

1. Prevention of sexual harassment and abuse of authority.
2. Prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA).
3. BSAFE.
4. Fraud Awareness.
5. Ethics and Integrity at UNICEF.
6. General Information Security Awareness.
