For every child, a Champion

In Burundi, UNICEF has a very diverse portfolio of responsibilities but all with the same objective which is to assist the Government and other stakeholders to fulfill children’s economic, social, cultural, political, and civil rights. The UNICEF country program in Burundi aims to improve the lives of children and women in the following key areas: Child and maternal health, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Social Policy and Advocacy, Adolescent empowerment and community resilience, and Humanitarian response.

How can you make a difference? 

Programme design and planning:

  • Support the development of planning documents and programme proposals that reflect disability-inclusive approaches, ensuring alignment with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the UNICEF disability inclusion policy and strategy (DIPAS), including for emergency responses.
  • Suggest disability-related indicators and targets in programme plans and performance monitoring frameworks, including for emergency responses.
  • Review partnership documents with an inclusion lens and support the establish of dedicated partnerships focused on disability inclusion in close collaboration with the programme sections, including with organizations of persons with disabilities (OPD), including for emergency responses.

Monitoring, evaluation and reporting:

  • Work with programme sections to increase the collection, analysis, and use of disaggregated data or specific indicators on children with disabilities in programme monitoring and evaluation.
  • Review Terms of Reference (ToRs) for evaluations, research studies, and surveys and make suggestions to ensure that disability inclusion is adequately addressed.
  • Compile and analyze inputs to quarterly reports against the disability inclusion workplan, identifying key achievements, challenges, and areas requiring further attention.
  • Contribute to the end-year reporting and other reporting exercises ensuring that the work of UNICEF in Burundi is accurately represented.
  • Collaborate with the Communication Section to develop materials that highlight good practices in disability-inclusive programming, ensuring these are disseminated internally within UNICEF and externally to partners, donors, and the broader development community.

Coordination and capacity building:

  • Provide technical guidance and support to sectoral programmes of the UNICEF Country Programme on disability programming in all areas of work.
  • Provide capacity building to UNICEF staff and partners to enhance their understanding and implementation of disability-inclusive programming.
  • Participate in inter-agency fora and inter-agency capacity-building activities on disability inclusion.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business and Economics, Social Sciences, International Relations, Political Science, Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, Education or another relevant technical field.
  • Work Experience: At least 2 years of relevant work experience in the field of disability inclusion, preferably within international development or humanitarian settings. Experience working in programme design, implementation, and monitoring, with a focus on disability inclusion, is required.
  • Language Requirements: Fluent in French and Kirundi with an elementary level in English.
